Anatomy of a Domain Name
A domain is typically broken into parts separated by dots:
- Top-Level Domain (TLD): The extension at the end, such as
.com,.org, or country-specific ones like.uk... - Second-Level Domain (2LD): The unique name you choose for your brand or site (e.g., the "google" in
google.com). - Subdomain: An optional prefix used to organise different sections of a site, such as
blog.example.com.
Getting a Domain
You do not strictly "buy" a domain forever; you lease it for a set period (usually 1 to 10 years) through a service called a domain registrar like GoDaddy, Namecheap, or Google Domains. To keep the domain, you must pay a renewal fee before it expires.
